Ivy Leaf Extract is obtained from the leaf of Hedera helix and is standardised on hederacoside C, its principal saponin. Its composition also includes flavonol glycosides such as kaempferol and rutin, alpha-hederin, sterols and sesquiterpenes. It is the botanical of reference in respiratory-comfort formulations, and its water solubility makes it especially straightforward in the liquid formats that dominate that category.

Hederacoside C and alpha-hederin
Hederacoside C is the majority saponin and the standardisation marker. Alpha-hederin, present in smaller amounts, is the fraction most often discussed in the literature on the botanical's respiratory activity.
Both come from the same raw material and travel together; standardising on hederacoside C is the industry practice because it is the most stable and reproducible marker to quantify.
Formulating in syrup
Water solubility is the practical advantage here: the extract integrates into the syrup without dispersants and without clouding. Watch the interaction with high sugar concentrations, which raise viscosity and slow dissolution — pre-dissolve in a fraction of the water before adding it to the batch.
Saponins foam. Plan for defoaming or slow agitation during filling if your line is sensitive to it.
